I live in a neighborhood without fences.

For some people, the absence of fences may feel like the beginning of insecurity. But for others, it represents openness, sharing, and a quiet richness of life. For me, it is the latter.

Each day, I return home passing more than twenty gentle gardens, each reflecting the care and spirit of its owners. In the mornings, I look out at my neighbor Erin’s garden—more beautiful than my own—and find myself filled with gratitude and a quiet spiritual joy.

Last Saturday, our neighbors Don and June warmly opened their home to host a Book Signing and Open House for Cloud Bird. Many guests gathered, including most of the owners of these open gardens, along with our mayor, the library director, and our local pastors.

During the gathering, four selected pages from Cloud Bird were shared aloud in three languages. The pastor’s wife, an elementary school teacher, read them in English, my neighbor Fernando in Spanish, and I in Korean. As the illustrations filled the television screen, the room glowed with smiles and the gentle music of different languages.

Knowing that all book sale proceeds would be donated to our local library brought even greater joy to everyone present.

As I reflect on that day, I feel these moments were possible because warmth quietly breathes through a community living without fences—where people open not only their gardens, but also their homes and hearts.

And so, today again, I am grateful.

Without Fence

나는 담장이 없는 동네에 삽니다.

담장이 없다는 것이 어떤 사람들에게는 불안의 시작일 수 있지만, 어떤 사람들에게는 열림과 나눔을 뜻하며 오히려 풍요로움을 안겨줍니다. 나에게는 후자에 더 가깝습니다.

나는 날마다 스무 채가 넘는 집들의 여린 정원을 바라보며 집으로 돌아옵니다. 아침이면 우리 집보다도 더 아름답게 느껴지는 옆집 Erin의 정원을 내려다보며 감사와 작은 영적 희열에 닿곤 합니다.

지난 토요일, 이웃 Don과 June은 자신들의 집을 활짝 열어 Cloud Bird의 Book Signing & Open House를 열어주었습니다. 많은 손님들이 찾아왔고, 열린 정원의 주인들 대부분이 함께해주었습니다. 시장님과 도서관장님, 지역 교회의 목사님

들도 자리를 빛내주셨습니다.

그 자리에서는 Cloud Bird 속에서 고른 네 페이지를 세 가지 언어로 함께 읽었습니다. 목사님의 부인이신 초등학교 선생님은 영어로, 옆집 Fernando는 스페인어로, 그리고 나는 한국어로 읽었습니다. TV 화면 가득 펼쳐진 일러스트는 시원하고 아름다웠고, 서로 다른 언어의 소리가 공간을 채우는 동안 사람들의 얼굴에는 미소가 번졌습니다.

책 판매 수익 전액이 지역 도서관에 기부된다는 사실 또한 모두를 더욱 기쁘게 했습니다.

돌아보면, 이 모든 순간들은 어쩌면 without fence의 공동체였기에 가능했던 것 같습니다. 담장 없이 살아간다는 것은 단지 정원을 나누는 일이 아니라, 때로는 집을 열고 마음을 열며 사랑과 협동의 숨결을 함께 나누는 일이기 때문입니다.

그래서 오늘도 나는 또 감사합니다.
